Artist's Comments

"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken:
The crownless again shall be king."

- JRR Tolkien, from Lord of the Rings

This is absolutely beautiful. Your ability to manipulate charcoal is incredible. You've been able to merge realism with the artist's mark flawlessly! This is truly an amazing work of art, both compelling and highly exemplary in technical skill. There's an obvious amount of effort and dedication that went into this piece and it adds further to the impressiveness of the final product. Great job!

Thank you so much! I strive for an accurate likeness but definitely not photo-realism :) So glad you like it!

Man’s evolution consists in the process of changing to forms that are not of this world. Grows he in time to the formless — to live on a higher plane. Know that you must become formless before you can be one with the Light.

everything about this, from the stubble detail to the shadow work, is just spectacular. you've outdone yourself once again :worship:

I forgot to store acorns for winter and now I am dead.

Thanks! :D yes, the shadow work was a bitch on this one, as was the little beads of sweat here and there and how the light caught some of the stubble. I think I spent an extra hour just on that stuff.

don't forget, he had 3 times the lifespan of normal men... but yes, it was always one of my favorite poems from the book. :)
