dedicated to ~lilie1111, who was kind enough to scan the latest Uncut magazine for reference photos and send them to me!
My inspiration for this one came from Led Zeppelin’s concert live at Madison Sq Garden in 1973 (DVD). I took the screen cap, which is really blurry, and pulled Jimmy out of it as I drew. (See the crappy ref photo here: [link] ) Always mysterious, none of the photos I came across seemed to capture his persona. So here it is, my version. Hope you like it! charcoal and gouache on illustration board. about 5 hours, start to finish. color filter and spotlights added in Photoshop. best viewed full size. B&W version here: [link] |

This was a hard draw, because the photo I worked from was so blurry but it did seem to capture his stage presence, as he flows with the music. Maybe the soft focus echoes the enigma. I will probably post the other version later today, the one which is just B&W.

My daddy isn´t artist but he´s a huge LZ fan
I like both older "classic" rock as well as alot of the new alternative music, I am extremely eclectic in my likes and dislikes- I was really young during the Woodstock era, so I never got to see them (LZ) in concert. What inspired me was seeing the concert DVD that was released last year. Maybe it was the possibility of a reunion tour that really got me excited. I guess I should have hopped a plane to London last Dec.
I have some Dire Straits and Pink Floyd in my collection as well. Pink Floyd, in concert, was something not to miss! Yeah, MTV is not what it started out to be,
