Winning Week...

If I don't answer you back, it's because I'm on vacation...

I'm finally taking a vacation...4 days in Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard. It starts with "Illumination Night" in which Cottage Park (a large group of Victorian gingerbread cottages) light thousands of paper lanterns in celebration here's a link to some photos of it: [link]
it really has a magical feeling, being there. wish I could paint it and do it justice.

There are many subjects I haven't drawn or painted because I don't think I'm ready yet to do them justice...

For good news I just won a first place for my oil painting "Drifting" [link] (first painting, top left) and a second place for my pastel painting "Moonrise Over Old Harbor" [link] (top row 2nd from left):D

For your entertainment I leave you with these funny vids: Touring With the Boys: [link]
and this one: [link]
both show Cobra's tour bus and my drawings of Ryland and Nate on their wall. It's worth watching just to see Gabe model Katy Perry's dress.

BYE!

This time I just might throw in a few random fabrications just to make it interesting….

1. I sing while driving in the car and often make up entirely new lyrics to songs on the radio, especially if I’m bored. They’re usually funny, sarcastic and rude, depending on my mood at the time.

2. I don’t trust anyone completely.

3. I rarely, if ever, feel guilty about anything. (maybe this is because I wasn’t raised Catholic?) Emotional blackmail doesn’t work on me, either.

4. I cry during sad movies.

5. My favorite car that I have owned was a dark blue ’73 Jaguar XKE V-12 convertible.

6. I used to drink out of birdbaths, even when they weren’t clean.

7. I‘ve been known to talk gullible friends into some weird things, just to see how far it can go before they realize I’m screwing with their minds. I convinced someone they had malaria for about month. Another time I talked a friend into playing a game I called “Raining Rocks”. “Stand over there,” I said, “while I throw this handful of rocks at you.” I was 10 – I guess I didn’t really think a rock would hit her. But it did, and she ended up having 4 stitches after it cut her head. We were best friends all through high school.

8. I once drank guano in my coffee.

9. I used to think that snakes lived in the toilet and under my bed at night.

hehehe... so which is the REAL ME ?

8 (uninteresting) facts about myself:

1. I started drawing when I was 2 years old. I only drew horses up until age 10 or so.

2. I don’t drink or smoke.

3. I supported myself as a night club bartender when I graduated RISD so I could pursue my art.

4. I designed and painted interiors and murals for nightclubs.

5. I have a sadistic sense of humor.

6. I am never lonely, even when I am alone.

7. I do my best work after midnight, and usually listen to an audiobook or music while working.

8. I really dislike organized religion of any kind. On a spiritual level, I particularly like Carolyn Myss’s books, especially “Sacred Contracts”.

Anyone snoring yet??? Thank goodness I didn’t have to come up with any more than 8… the rest is on a need-to-know basis, since I’m a lousy liar.

Ryan Ross- portrait

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 16, 2008, 6:52 PM
I guess I've been down lately so I thought I'd cheer myself up by drawing from an old ref photo of Ryan Ross that I've had on my HD.. the photo was a bad scan from a AP mag... but I really like the way it came out.

I have this thing about wanting to draw people exactly the way they look, but also making them look somehow better than the photo would...(otherwise, why would I just want to copy? a photo- that's just an EXERCISE)I'm not sure how I do this, making someone look even better than in a photo, but it's kind of intuitive - just seems to happen as I draw.

Anyhow, here's my drawing advice so this was worth reading:
Draw what you SEE, not what you THINK you should see.
